One of these Historical mountains that have served as a place of refuge when Ekiti Communities are threatened by invaders during inter-tribal wars is the Ancient #EsaCave located in Iyin Ekiti in South West Nigeria. Obviously, #EsaCave is one of the ancient attractions the world may not know exist in Ekiti State.

According to oral history, #EsaCave & Mountain have been in existence since over 800 years ago, this astonishing “Rocky Mountain and Cave” have an ancient and age-long history of being a safe harbor and refuge for the Iyin and Ado ancient settlers during inter-tribal wars in Yoruba land.

During the wars, the warrior and the people would run to the cave for safety till the community is restored to normalcy. The people of ancient Iyin Ekiti found refuge in these historic places whenever there is trouble or war in the town. Oral history told about how neighboring tribes always threatened people in Ancient Ekiti Communities and about how they are usually taken as slaves by their enemies to be sold to white men.

However, Some Historic Ekiti hills and Mountains such as #EsaCave came to their rescue after a period of time. And since then, most of Ekiti hills and Mountains have been tagged as historic monuments in hosted Communities.

To date, a visit to #EsaCave revealed that this natural monument still maintains its natural look which shows evidence of long use. The Cave has demarcated rooms separated by a low-height wall made from mud bricks which had become strong and difficult to pull down. Also, small boulders used as pillows by old occupants remain in the cave
