Nigeria has the highest number of people living with sickle cell with over 150,000 sickle cell births per year . With approxinmately 4million people living with sickle cell.
Sadly, the country also accounts for high rate of stigmatization of people living with the disorder, this is largely due to the misconceptions around the disorder. There are a lot of myths associated with the disorder and they have been a building block for stigmatization. Some of these myths include a belief in short life span, infertility and some stereotypes.
June 19 is commemorated as world sickle cell day annually and it is a day set aside to create awareness about sickle cell, a day to celebrate people living with sickle cell and to debunk myths, clearing them and educating people with the facts. At LUTH SICKLE CELL CLUB, We believe that till myths are corrected and the facts presented, stigma may never end.
Join us to create awareness and to speak against the stigmatization of persons living with sickle cell and help give warriors a more comfortable life
