As climate threats intensify, World Decarbonization Day emerges from Africa as a global call to action to accelerate decarbonization, drive just energy transitions, and secure our collective future.

Africa, least responsible for historic emissions yet most affected by climate change, stands at a defining crossroads: to move from resource-rich to climate-smart. With abundant clean energy potential, critical minerals, natural ecosystems, and a dynamic youth population, Africa has what it takes to lead the world into a low-carbon future.

But this leadership must be just. It must recognize that Africa cannot afford to choose between development and decarbonization. Instead, we must be supported to harness our fossil fuel wealth responsibly, reinvesting in renewables, deploying cleaner technologies, advancing carbon capture, and using natural gas as a bridge toward equity in access.

Decarbonization must not demonize, it must deliver.

What’s at stake is more than emissions. It is global security, shared prosperity, and climate resilience.

A decarbonizing Africa uplifts the planet. A climate-secure Africa benefits all.

World Decarbonization Day is not just Africa’s voice, it is the world’s opportunity. Now commemorated every September 3, it was initiated by Women in Energy, Oil & Gas (WEOG), Nigeria, as a legacy-driven global call, born in Africa, embraced by the world, and powered by partnerships.
