Walk To End FGM

DESCRIPTION

"Walk to End FGM" is here again!

The annual Walk started in 2014 at Washington DC when Global Woman PEACE Foundation organised the inaugural charity walk-a-thon against Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting.

This year, GWPF has decided to partner with W.A.V.E Foundation to organise the walk-a-thon in Abuja for the first time to commemorate the International Day of the Girl Child 2021.

Do you know that at least 200 million girls and women alive today have undergone a form of FGM?

The UN has said that over the next decade there will be two million more cases of FGM as COVID-19 has interrupted efforts to protect and re-educate people against this abusive act.

The UN set a target of ending FGM and the practices associated with it by 2030, which they described as an “ambitious commitment.”

The agency said that FGM needs to be seen as a global issue and the pandemic has only exacerbated inequalities, leaving the most vulnerable in a much worse position.

You may be asking, what is FGM and how does it affect the well being of a woman?

FGM is the procedure of removing a part or all of the external female genitalia or injuring it. It has no health benefits. The practice is volatile and traumatic.

Female Genital Cutting (FGC) inflicts life-long injuries on women and their female children. It constitutes a violation of women’s fundamental human rights and threats to bodily integrity. Though decreasing, the practice is high and widespread in Nigeria despite efforts towards its eradication

Yeah! This is why we have to work together to end it now.
