The World Giving Library (WGL) Project
The “World Giving Library” (WGL) project seeks to house the most comprehensive web resource on generosity practices, recognising generosity’s full richness and diversity across time and space. In its revised phase, led by Giving Tuesday Data Commons and supported by the National Philanthropic Trust (NPT), this initiative offers one step toward achieving these goals.
The Africa Pilot: A Collaborative Effort
As part of the WGL initiative, TrustAfrica and GivingTuesday have come together for the African pilot of this project. This collaboration specifically focuses on collecting and documenting giving practices that are unique to Africa, emphasizing the continent's rich heritage of generosity. While it’s part of the broader WGL project, the African pilot is distinctly supported by TrustAfrica's resources, highlighting their significant contribution not just in partnership but also in the mobilization of necessary assets and expertise.
This pilot has successfully curated 20 African giving traditions thanks to contributors who have contributed their insights and expertise helping to build a robust repository of African giving narratives, traditions and practices. These contributions are vital in spotlighting the unique role and value of embedded giving practices across the continent.
Webinar Objectives
At the webinar in May 2024, we will introduce the project, reflect on its place in the philanthropy ecosystem, and seek to deepen the discussion on the importance of understanding such giving narratives.
